Seven hills and five lakes

Legend speaks of seven hills: the cathedral stands on Lech Hill and the Rynek on Panieńskie Hill, so expect short climbs in the Old Town. Five lakes lie within the city, including Jelonek and Winiary, with cycle paths around Jelonek.

S5 around town, DK15 through it

Through traffic bypasses Gniezno on the S5 — you enter town at the Gniezno Północ and Gniezno Południe junctions. The DK15, however, runs through the city, partly as ul. Wrzesińska. The centre has a paid parking zone, and two railway lines cross at the station, so allow for level crossings.

From the Old Town to Grunwaldzkie

Gniezno covers 40.6 km², so trips are rarely long. The centre is the Old Town between the Rynek and the cathedral. Many addresses are on the big estates — Tysiąclecia, Jagiellońskie and Grunwaldzkie by ul. Wrzesińska — and in Dalki. Quieter streets of houses spread around Lake Winiary.

Galeria Gniezno at ul. Pałucka 2

A key pickup point is Galeria Gniezno at ul. Pałucka 2, open since 2005, with restaurants among its tenants. Galeria Piastova has stood at the corner of ul. Witkowska and ul. Składowa since 2018. In the centre, orders come from places around the Rynek with its fountain.

Royal Coronation and speedway on Wrzesińska

Every year Gniezno hosts the Royal Coronation festival — in 2025 it ran on 18–20 July and marked 1,000 years since Bolesław Chrobry was crowned. The Piast Trail passes through town, and the stadium at ul. Wrzesińska 25 (10,000 seats) is home to the Start Gniezno speedway team.
